![]() Before the omnipresence of the internet exposed the true seedy underbelly of these relationships, one of the most cherished romantic comedies of the last thirty years tackled the parasocial relationship head-on, Sleepless in Seattle. Plenty of these one-sided connections result in behavior that could range from unhealthy possessiveness to outright violence in some cases, leading to things like stalking, sexual harassment, and even worse, such as the case of singer Christina Grimmie's murder in 2016. But parasocial relationships come with a whole host of negative connotations. They may even connect two people who have similar parasocial relationships with the same person. For many people who feel adrift and alone in the world, they can provide a bit of mental safety and comfort. On the one hand, parasocial relationships have their benefits. YouTube, where a plethora of people have reached millions by speaking directly into the camera about their lives, probably best exemplifies how these one-sided relationships develop on the audience's side. Because we experience these things isolated on our phones or computers, our brain can often trick us into believing they are forming one-on-one bonds with us, maybe to the point of thinking this person we truly do not know is our friend or perhaps even a potential romantic partner. Whether it is through Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok, part of us believes that the content a certain person puts out into the world, like a vlog or an Instagram story, is actually done in dialogue with the audience, rather than as a crafted piece of entertainment. Parasocial relationships occur when one person expends all the energy to create what they feel is a crucial bond between them and another person, while the one on the receiving end goes about their life not knowing the other exists. ![]() Hanks, Ryan and Ephron teamed up again for You've Got Mail, which is inferior but still worthwhile. With the prevalence of social media dominating the internet landscape, we have drastically experienced a collective increase in parasocial relationships with people online. The climax at the top of the Empire State Building takes its inspiration from the 1950s weepie An Affair to Remember(with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr), and is very effective. ![]() In terms of acting, both Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan give marvellous lead performances, while Ross Malinger is a nice surprise as Hanks's son. The scenery is striking, the soundtrack is very welcoming, the direction is solid and the script has heart and wit. The other is features a woman journalist from Baltimore, who overhears the broadcast with Hanks's son pouring his heart out about his concerns for dad and decides to track him down. The idea to keep Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan apart for most of the movie is a dangerous one, but guess what, I found that it worked! Strictly speaking, Sleeping in Seattle is made up of two story lines, one is about a recently widowed man who moves to Seattle and does nothing but grieve. In general, Sleepless in Seattle is just a charming romantic comedy, co-scripted and directed by When Harry Met Sally writer Nora Ephron. The fact that it is somewhat old-fashioned is not a bad thing at all, in fact it is done wonderfully. Sleepless in Seattle is manipulative and unashamedly so.
